Jay Woodland, MD

Meet The Staff | Woodland FamilyDr. Jay Woodland earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP), where he was a James Scholar Honors Graduate. He received multiple awards during his general surgery residency, such as "Outstanding House Staff Angel Award," for outstanding service to the medical center's Mission and his consistent achievements above and beyond normal work responsibilities.

Dr. Woodland is an Assistant Professor in the University of Illinois Department of Surgery - Peoria. Along with Dr. Proehl, he mentors and trainings UICOMP surgery residents at OSF Saint James - John W. Albrecht Medical Center. He is on the active staff at OSF Saint James, where he performs all of his surgeries and office procedures. Dr. Woodland has a special interest in minimally invasive (small incision) surgery, such as laparoscopic hernia repair and laparoscopic appendectomy, and brought laparoscopic colon resection to Pontiac. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Woodland was a nationally-ranked athlete in his youth, though not on a ball diamond or gridiron, as you might expect for someone who grew up in Oblong, in rural southeastern Illinois. He was an aqua-acrobat, a competitive water-skier for whom precision in those days meant nailing somersaults and back-flips behind a racing motorboat. Through this sport, he learned what hard work and self-discipline could do, lessons that served him well while training to become a surgeon.

Dr. Woodland is married to Rachel, his high school sweetheart and a speech pathologist at OSF Saint James. They live in Pontiac and are parents to daughter, Adrienne, and son, Elliott.
